The University of Kentucky's Chairs' Academy is a homegrown leadership development program. The Academy's mission is to encourage faculty to consider leadership career paths, and to guide new and prospective chairs and academic directors in developing the skills that are requisites for effective institutional leadership. The semester-long Academy features 6 2-hour workshop sessions, covering the spectrum of issues confronting front-line administrators at UK. Since the Academy's inception in 2014-2015, 117 individuals have gone through the program.

Program Goals
The desired outcome is to create a cohort of leaders for UK that have the proficiencies to work with their colleagues by effectively employing quality leadership skills and being able to have insight into the overall role of the University, so as to strategically lead our over 100 departments and schools into our next 150 years of service to the Commonwealth and nation.
Program Target Audience
All new and prospective department chairs and school directors are encouraged to apply to participate.
Application Process
Applications are due June 30, 2025, to the Faculty Advancement Application Portal, with the selection of the cohort expected no later than August 1, 2025.
The application for the Chairs’ Academy requires the following documents (in PDF format):
- Curriculum vitae or resume.
- Brief statement of leadership goals and information regarding interest in being a part of the Chairs’ Academy and how this involvement might benefit the candidate’s academic unit, college, and the University as a whole.
- Brief statement of level of commitment to attending all scheduled workshop sessions and activities. (Note: Unavoidable scheduling conflicts may be accommodated by the participant joining a subsequent Academy session, although full participation is strongly encouraged.)
- Brief bio, 500 words or less.
